I feel very excited to have such an opportunity to exchange ideas with distinguished scholars, both Chinese and Western, on issuespertainingto English teachingin China. Although I have no experiencewith English teaching here in China, Ive beenteaching English in Singapore for nearly thirty years. Also, since 1974 I have been undertaking researchon the varieties of English spoken in Singaporeand the functions of English in that highly multilingual nation. Among other research projects, I have been quantitatively investigating systematic features in the continuum of English spoken and written there. Englishin Singaporemay not be Englishin the Chinesecontextbut it is certainlyEnglishin a Chinesecontext. As a nation, Singapore is almost at the other extreme in size and population from China-2.5 million people on an island about 27 kilometers east to west and about 22 from north to south. But its small size makesit a very convenientplace in which to investigate English under Chineseinfluence. 767oof the population are Chinese, l47o Malay and 77o Indian. Although there are Malay words in colloquial SingaporeEnglish, it is Chinesethat has beenthe dominantsubstratuminfluence. What has happenedin Singaporewill not, of course,be exactly replicated in China. In Singapore,English is the main medium of education and will soon be the sole medium. In China, the situation
