Many large enterprises begin to implement EDI from the purchasing department to reduce the cost of handling purchase orders received from suppliers. Manufacturers have found that material release documents are good starting points for using EDI because they can support manufacturing strategies in a timely fashion with EDI. Instead, supply firms often find that sales order processing is the first concern of EDI, as their major customers want to send purchase orders electronically. Accounts payable for cash and receipts are also areas of interest to EDI. To select a specific field, the EDI Steering Committee allows the EDI coordinator to investigate the enterprises customers and suppliers. It is useless to build EDI systems in areas that are not supported by a large number of trading partners or a small number of highly traded partners. Buyer firms often require trading partners to use EDI as a condition of business, which is why procurement is the first area of EDI implementation in larger enterprises. Conduct EDI survey or cost / benefit analysis The EDI coordinator is also responsible for the EDI cost benefit analysis. Cost benefit analysis can further determine the most likely scenario for the implementation of EDI and indicate its priority in development. But the cost-benefit analysis should be as short as possible in order to maintain the momentum of the EDI. The analysis should include an introduction to current systems in each functional area, and determine the possible ways in which EDI can improve these systems.
