Here, among other items, it is important to meet the required steel melt tem- peratures at the tundish outlets. Against this background Deutsche Edelstahlwerke GmbH (DEW) and VDEh- Betriebsforschungsinstitut GmbH (BFI) developed a new on-line temperature model to predict the tundish outlet temperatures. Based on operational trials first an extensive database was generated. Than the new approach was to use first a numerical off-line model to investigate the correlation between process parameters and melt tempera- tures with the aim to provide a more detailed information for the on-line model, which cannot be obtained by opera- tional investigations or analytical calculations. Here especially transient events like ladle change were taken into account. The numerical computed temperatures were in good agreement with the measured temperatures in the steel plant.
