Relationship Between Ultimate Ownership and Firm s Total
Factor Productivity

Abstract: The ultimate ow nership and firms total factor producti ity ( TFP) w ere calculated on
the basis of the panel data of manufacturing companies listed in China from 2003 to 2007. A fixed
effect model w as de eloped to study the relationship between the ultimate ow nership and firms
T FP. The regression results show that there is a significant cubic cur e relationship between
ultimate ow nership and firm s TFP. T he relationship changes clearly tw ice w hen the ultimate
ow nership rises, i. e. , if the ultimate ow nership is below 0. 30, it is positi ely related to the
T FP. Howe er, the relationship becomes negati e w hile the ultimate ow nership is in the inter al
of [ 0. 30, 0. 75] . Further, if the ultimate ow nership is abo e 0. 75, the relationship becomes
positi e once again. T he results indicate that the ultimate ow nership has a significant go ernance
effect and can influence the TFP.
