In additional to our normal backup procedures that still work with virtualized servers, VMware virtualization gives you the option of backing up a complete virtual machine, configuration and disk files included, by backing up the small number of files that make up the virtual machine. This provides you with a simple way to back up an entire virtual machine that can be recovered in its entirety by restoring the virtual machine configuration files from within the backup software. You can still use your normal backup and restore procedures for more granular, individual file recovery. Recovery can also use your existing procedures and software. However, when virtual infrastructure is deployed in conjunction with shared storage, such as SAN, recovery becomes much easier and faster. If a physical server hosting VMware software fails, virtual machines can simply be re-started on different hardware—the virtual machine is stored on the shared disk, independent of the physical hardware. Because it’s the same virtual machine, you don’t need to have duplicate software licenses for the software in the virtual machine. (Note that shared storage is only practical for recovery systems that are located relatively close to the primary systems.)
