Failure modes and discrim ination method for K iewitt reticulated
dome under im act loads

Abstract: FE models of both the K iewitt reticulated dome ( singlelayer reticulated dome w ith threedmi ensional grids
sector) w ith of the span of 60m and a cylindrical mi pactor were developed, incorporating ANSYS/LSDYNA. Four
failuremodeswere proposed according to the dynam ic response of mi pact on the apex of the Kiew itt reticulated dom e
based on numerical analysis. Itwas found that the correlationsbewt een the initial mi pact conditions and the failuremodes
were insignificant. H owever, therewas close correlation bewt een the response velocity of the mi pacted joint, .i e. the
velocity of the mi pacted joint just after the first mi pact, and the dynam ic responses of the dome was revealed. The
response velocity was used to judge the failure modes. Theoretical solution of the response velocity was achieved by
means of the defined mi pact zone and the equivalent mass of the zone. The response velocity and the judgment of the
failuremodes of the dom e can be obtained by using the smi plified theoretical approach, w ithout sophisticated FE
modelling.
