Non-oriented Electrical Steels for Eco-friendly Vehicles ·1 · Non-oriented Electrical Steels for Eco-friendly Vehicles Kim Jae-hoon, Kim Jae-seong, Kim Ji-hyun, Park Jong-tae (POSCO Technical Research Laboratories, POSCO, Pohang, Korea) Abstract This paper presents the characteristic of newly developed electrical steel and motor performance analysis for HEV/EV. This material is developed and optimized for high frequency operation to reduce the core losses in traction motors to increase fuel efficiency. Four types of electrical steels are introduced, which are optimized for high flux density (PNHF), high frequency low core loss (PNF), high punchability (PNSF) and high strength (PNT) to meet different specifications from different types of traction motors. Moreover, new products are being under development in response to various customers’ requirement. Key words non-oriented electrical steel, traction motor, HEV, EV 1 Introduction Recently, regulatory policy on environmental issues such as CO emission and air pollution has been enhanced. 2 In automotive industry, improvement of fuel economy and reduction of exhaust gas is required. Therefore, it is focusing on developing eco-friendly vehicles such as hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and electrical vehicle (EV). According to the report[1], more than 5.2 million eco-friendly vehicles or 7.3% of total sales per year by 2020 will be expected. In eco-friendly vehicles, the role of conventional internal combustion engine is reduced or replaced by electric traction motors to achieve better fuel economy and less emission. Therefore
