* These diagrams show the radiant heating and cooling systems that work with the concrete floor slabs. Although concrete is very high in embodied energy, it is a very valuable material in Carbon Neutral Design for its use as THERMAL MASS. The project uses geothermal exchange to assist with heating and cooling through the floor slabs of the building. * Super insulation on the piping reduces losses. It is critical to build excellently and to prevent energy losses as renewable energy is more difficult to come by. * A thin building plan allows you to light all perimeter zones with daylight and avoid the use of electrical lighting. It is important to also use light level and occupant sensors with this system. This large room is only used in the spring, summer and fall when heating is not really required. They have a wood burning fireplace for when it gets chilly. * * The Aldo Leopold Center used sustainable practices when they were harvesting their wood. The harvest would actually make the forest healthier than before. Aldo Leopold Center LEEDTM Analysis The LEED score for the building is as follows: 12/14 Sustainable Sites 5/5 Water Efficiency 17/17 Energy and Atmosphere 7/13 Materials and Resources 15/15 Indoor Environmental Quality 5/5 Innovation and Design Process 61/69 Total This is one of the highest LEED scores to date. It is one of the ONLY buildings to ever score ALL 17/17 Energy and Atmosphere points.
