Ralph Waldo Ellison (1914 — 1994) Born in Oklahoma Son of a construction worker Life Experience Early life Writing career Final years Daydreamed of being “Renaissance Men.” ? Values and attitudes of Native Americans and whites, as well as blacks.? At Douglas High School, Ellison followed his inclination toward music.? Early Life In 1933, the Tuskegee Institute(塔斯克基学院) on a scholarship to study music. After his third year, New York City to study the visual arts. He studied sculpture and photography. Richard Wright encouraged him to be a writer rather than a musician.??? From 1937 to 1944, over twenty book reviews, short stories and articles published in magazines such as New Challenge and New Masses. Writing career During World War II, Ellison joined the Merchant Marine. From 1947 to 1951, he spent time working on Invisible Man. In 1952, Invisible Man was published and won the National Book Award in 1953. In 1955, Ellison went abroad to Europe. He wrote an essay called A New Southern Harvest in Rome in 1957. Writing career In 1958, returned to the United States to teach American and Russian literature at Bard College. In 1964, Ellison published Shadow and Act, and began to teach at Rutgers University and Yale University. In 1969, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 1970, became a permanent member of the faculty at New York University. Writing career In 1975, The American Academy of Arts and Letters; the Ralph Waldo Ellison Library (his hometown of Oklahoma City). In 1984, the New York City College’s Langston Hughes Medal. In 1985, the National Medal of Arts. In 1986, his Going to the Territory was published. Final years In 1992, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards. Ellison was also a charter member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers. Died on April 16,1994, of pancreatic cancer (胰癌) and was buried at Trinity Church Cemetery in the Washington Heights.
