People with different cultural backgrounds show different understandings of politeness. Sometimes what one considers to be polite may not be true for another because of cultural differences. Therefore, Politeness Principle plays a crucial role in cross-cultural communication. In order to make the interaction going on smoothly and successfully in cross-cultural activities, people have to master some politeness principles. This paper firstly describes the Co-operative Principle, which was put forward by Grice. The Co-operative Principle requires that the participants in conversation should follow the maxims of the Co-operative Principle so as to have successful communication. However, by considering of the appropriateness and degree of politeness, people have to adhere to some politeness principles. Hence, this article briefly describes a Chinese Politeness Principle by Gu Yueguo and an English Politeness Principle by Leech.
