Wang Siyang 【Abstract 】Obesity has generally become a worldwide issue, which has raised extensive controversy. Some believe that common fast food is responsible for this problem, while others hold that it is the human genome that gives rise to such disease. 【Key Words】Obesity; Fast food; Gene; Trait 【中图分类号】R587 【文献标识码】A【文章编号】1007-8231(2011)07-0571-02 With the tremendous development of the fast food industry, people seem to get fat, really fat. During the last several decades, according to the World Health Organization, the incidence of obesity has increased rapidly, which makes people believe that such a situation is totally due to the fast-foot giants, like Burger King and McDonaldrsquo;s, which make huge profits but leave us with bad health. Some American consumer organizations have even brought a lawsuit against those fast food companies which were thought to be responsible for the consumersrsquo; obesity. But is fast food the culprit? As we know, one trait of an organism is the result of environment and inheritance. In other words, environment and genes work jointly to influence the organismrsquo;s trait. For example, the shortness of a pea plant may result from the alleles and can also possibly result from the barren soil. Like some other disease, Obesity is also the result of the genes and environmentrsquo;s interaction. So exactly which factor is more influential with regard to obesity, environment or genes? According to a recent research shown on Wikipedia, 80 percent of the children of those who are affected by obesity are obese patients, while those children whose parents have normal weight have obviously less possibilities (about 10 percent) to be affected.
