Targeting at anthropocentric attitudes, ecocriticism argues that nature is either reduced to mere facts and data under the panoptic gaze of modern science and technology, stripped of all mystery and transcendent meaning, or is represented as the embodiment of human emotions, moral values, aesthetic tastes, and religious feelings, its physical existence subject to human shaping and manipulation. Apparently influenced by these two attitudes, Hopkins’s nature poems offer a critique on and an alternative to such anthropocentric stance. Informed of the development of contemporary science, Hopkins puts nature under scrutiny, records natural objects with meticulous details, but his nature is not naturalist’s research material. Meanwhile, though filled with religious passion, Hopkins never sacrifices the physical existence of nature in the worshipping of God. Influenced by the Catholic idea of sacramentalism, Hopkins presents nature as a sacramental ritual, with men and natural beings living out the body of Jesus Christ by their unique physical existence, and Incarnation as an ever happening event in nature.
