Started on 9 September 1941, the blockade lasted almost 900 days. Despite signing the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact in 1939, Adolf Hitler invaded the Soviet Union with the support of the Axis powers in June 1941 with the aim of wiping out the nation and Communism, which it symbolised. Part of the campaign involved occupying Leningrad and making the Baltic Sea Germanys ‘inland sea’, and Hitler also planned to attack other Soviet cities, including Moscow, in order to seize other strategic resources. Two months after the invasion had been launched, the Germans advanced on the southern suburb of Leningrad, where the Soviet army put up fierce and desperate resistance. The siege finally came to an end when the Germans retreated in January 1944. Tsarskoye Selo, located 25 kilometres southeast of Leningrad, was unfortunately occupied by the German army during the siege of Leningrad.
