* * Do we have the ability to do asynchronous discussions? * * One factor that is almost certain to make an online discussion flop is making it optional. Online students dont often opt for optional learning activities. In an on-campus class, we can have discussions that arent graded because the students are there in the room with us. ? We ask questions, and because students are there in the room with us, they answer—even if only to fill up an awkward silence. Theres usually no need to grade these discussions because the learning environment helps to encourage participation. In an online class, however, we instructors are much, much easier to ignore. ? ? Grading discussions is a very effective way of encouraging students to participate. Of course, some discussions such as introductions or QAs dont need to be graded, but consider grading discussions that cover course content to encourage participation. ? Photosynthesis, in this picture, is a magical, complex process that happens everywhere, all around us.
