China Guardian Lecture 嘉德讲堂 敦煌故事 The Story of Dunhuang 演讲人 _拓晓堂  整理 _王东  By Ta Xiaotang Beginning in May 1900 when Dunhuang’s Hidden Sutra Cave was first discovered, Dunhuang manuscripts began to scatter and circulate among lay people. Just like legend about the Hidden Sutra Cave opening, basic questions regarding the reasons for the hidden cave, the timing, the number of manscripts, etc., even now have not yet been answered. Every time a new Dunhuang document appears, it always surprises and excites people around the world. This possibly explains the perpetual enthusiasm for Dunhuang manuscripts. On May 12, 2010, during China Guardian 2010 Spring Auction preview exhibition, the general manager of China Guardian’s Rare Book and Manuscripts Department, Mr. Ta Xiaotang, gave a special lecture called “The Story of Dunhuang” in which he discussed relevant knowledge and current views while introducing several important Dunhuang handwritten manuscripts presented in the Spring Auction. Happily, the Dunhuang manuscripts all fetched high auction prices. The top prize went to the early Tang dynasty manuscript handscroll, “Sheng siwei fantian suowen jingjuan di si,” commissioned by a monk from Shamen in the 6th year (623) of Tang Wude’s reign (618–626), with a titleslip written by Huang Binhong, that sold for RMB 3.024 million yuan (US $442,911.00).
