He is sentenced to life sentence at Shawshank State Penitentiary（监狱）. Nndy Warden(典狱长) Norton a wolf in sheep‘s clothing(人面兽心), he creates a scheme to use prison labor for public works, undercutting the cost of skilled labor . Norton has Andy launder the money(洗钱) under a false identity, in exchange for allowing Andy to keep his private cell and to continue maintaining the library. Andy finds Red has connections on the outside who can acquire contraband(违禁品)for the inmates, and first asks Red for a rock hammer in order to maintain his rock collection hobby. In prison, Andy is quickly befriended by “Red” ,a fellow inmate (囚犯)serving a life sentence who has recently failed to gain parole(假释).
