The need for interoperability testing arises when it is required to demonstrate that two or more systems or system components are capable of communicating with each other. This Recommendation defines the relevant principles, methodology and architectures to serve as a foundation for interoperability testing and the development of interoperability test suites. Introduction ITU-T develops and approves Recommendations in the area of specification and testing of telecommunication systems. Many systems are implemented independently using specifications based on international standards. As systems grow more complex, it is crucial to the proper operation of networks and systems that their constituent components are properly tested. ITU-T provides Recommendations in three areas of testing: conformance testing, interoperability testing, and performance testing. Conformance testing (CT) checks whether an implementation is implemented correctly with respect to the requirements stated in the relevant standard or specification. Conformance testing is often required as a prerequisite to interoperability testing. By itself, it has two important limitations. Specifications may contain non-interoperable components such as optional features.
