What are tabloids? A type of newspaper that is popular in America and Britain, but today well focus on Britain. Definition: A condensed or smaller newspaper featuring stories of scandal, violence or crime. News of the World Rupert Murdoch – Media Mogul Rupert Murdoch – Media Mogul A media mogul is someone who owns several media operations. Usually radio, TV news stations and several newspapers. Rupert Murdoch – Media Mogul Rupert Murdoch is originally from Australia and he started working at News of the World and made it very successful and then bought The Sun, which he also made very successful. Eventually, he purchased many other companies, like American newspapers, movie studios, radio and television networks. Rupert Murdoch – Media Mogul Rupert Murdoch is meg-rich! Heres an example of what he he owns: HarperCollins – large publishing company. Fox Channel/Movie Studio – which produces shows like Prison Break. Star Chinese – Chinese satellite broadcasting group. New York Post – highly respected newspaper. Wall Street Journal – another highly respected newspaper. Rupert Murdoch – Media Mogul For our class, we only care about the tabloids he owned: Tabloid journalism In the last class, we established that tabloid journalism is not very trustworthy, reliable or balanced. What is the difference between tabloid journalism and serious journalism? Tabloid journalism: Use “unnamed sources”. Notice this is not the same thing as interviewing experts. Do not gather facts or statistics; if they do, not much is offered. Rely on “informants”, people who are paid for their information or story, which is not always verified or reliable. Usually writes in a vulgar manner, while serious journalism uses more formal language.
