E-mail: {sunilkul,iyerav,cath}@ April 26, 2005 DRAFT 2 Abstract In this paper, we propose an address-light, integrated MAC and routing protocol (abbreviated AIMRP) for wireless sensor networks. A wireless sensor network (WSN) is characterized by a high node density, limited energy budgets, a collaborative objective and a many-to-one communication paradigm. Due to the broad spectrum of applications encompassed by WSNs, there is a strong need to develop protocol solutions that are optimized for specific classes of applications. AIMRP is a lightweight and integrated solution for WSN applications exhibiting long periods of inactivity between rare events which require prompt detection and response. Owing to the many-to-one communication paradigm, there is no need for routing capability from each node to every other node, and hence no need for strict per-node addressing. AIMRP utilizes this fact by employing an address-light, tier-based routing scheme which is integrated with the MAC mechanism.
