Further questions for discussion About the author About the author: Alexander S. Neill (1883—1973) was born in Scotland and educated in Edinburgh. A prolific writer, educator, and child psychologist, Neill founded, in Suffolk, England, the famous Summerhill School, an experimental school aimed at freeing the child’s creative imagination from the restrictions of conventional education. Besides Summerhill, from which this text comes, Neill’s books on unregimented education are The Problem Child, The problem Parent, The Problem Teacher, and The Problem Family. Ted Ottley 1. Background of the Text 英国教育家A.S.Neill因不满传统教育模式,与妻子共同创办了著名的Summerhill 学校。该学校重在培养学生的创造力,独立自主的精神,个性的发挥。The Summerhill School in Leiston, Suffolk was started in the 1920s as an experiment by Neill and his wife, ardent believers in the idea of inculcating(灌输)happiness as the main, if not the only purpose of education. It is a radical example of English education without the fear of autho rity and respectful children’s freedom, independence and creativity. 2. Background of the Text Education in Summerhill School needs to be seen in light of(鉴于)childrens overall experience in the boarding school. The principle of life and schooling in Summerhill community is that the children are free to pursue their interests and choose what they want to learn, do, wear, say and become. All lessons are optional(选修的)and the timetable(课程表)exists only for teachers. 2. Background of the Text However, according to Neill (1973) children who come to the school from the beginning, do not show the problems for other children who come from other schools, where there is an average three-month period of recovery from lesson aversion(厌恶).
