WP8 - Alcohol Joceline Pomerleau, Martin McKee, Kate Charlesworth London School of Hygiene Tropical Medicine Relevance of studying alcohol consumption in DYNAMO Consumption: The EU is the heaviest drinking region of the world (11 l pure alcohol/adult/yr) On average, EU15 adults get drunk 5 times/yr and “binge-drink” 17 times/yr 23 million Europeans are dependent on alcohol in any one year Health impacts: Alcohol is the 3rd highest risk factors for ill-health in the EU (after tobacco and high blood pressure, and ahead of overweight/obesity) It is a cause of some 60 different types of diseases and conditions It is responsible in the EU for 195,000 deaths/yr and 7.4% of premature death and disability Social/economic impacts: It contributes to health inequalities between and within EU Member States The tangible costs of alcohol (attributable disease, injury, violence, cost the health, welfare, employment and criminal justice sectors) reach €125bn/yr Intangible costs could reach €270bn/yr Measurement of alcohol intake Two important dimensions need to be considered: volume consumed drinking pattern = GBD study considered both dimensions: Average volume of pure alcohol consumed Abstinence Drinking category I: females 0-20 g/d; males 0-40 g/d Drinking category II: females 20-40 g/d; males 40-60 g/d Drinking category III: females 40+ g/d; males 60+ g/d Drinking pattern score Level 1: Least detrimental patterns such as least heavy drinking occasions, drinking with meals, no fiesta drinking, least drinking in public places Level 2: Second lowest quartile Level 3: Second highest quartile Level 4: Most detrimental patterns Issues Under-estimation of consumption in surveys Social acceptability bias* Too drunk to remember* Heaviest drinkers excluded from surveys Drinking pattern Few data on prevalence Almost no data quantifying risks Would require a cohort of millions followed for a month!
