The author discovered the Hakka house in 2006 and visited the Jieyangtang for seven times in the last eight years. He has witnessed the transformation of the Hakka building from a neglected old house to a recognized cultural heritage. The Jieyangtang was built by Liang Biru, a self-made tycoon in British Malaya, who built the gorgeous house in his hometown to show his wealth and fame in the late nineteenth century. Unfortunately, Liang’s family was purged and the building was confiscated and partly damaged during the People’s Republic, especially in the Cultural Revolution in the mid-1960s.
