硕士生美国电影文化讲座材料(一) The Scarlet Letter 红字(红色禁恋) 影片简介 In 1666 Hester Prynne arrives in Puritan Boston to find a place for herself and her husband, Roger Prynne, who is to join her later. She dreams of happiness and freedom of worship without fear or persecution. She buys a cottage outside town and starts new life on the cliffs by the sea. While working in the field one day, a little redbird leads her to a woodland waterfall, where a man is swimming. On the way to Church, Hesters cart gets stuck in a forest mudhole, and the same man, Arthur Dimmesdale, helps her to arrive on time. At the meeting house, Hester discovers that Dimmesdale is the minister, and is deeply moved by his passionate sermon. Soon Dimmensdale visits Hester, they become powerfully attracted to one another. Two young hearts begin to struggle against a love that is growing stronger with each passing day. Word arrives that Roger Prynne has been killed in an Indian raid, and the last barrier between Hester and Dimmesdale vanishes. Hester fails pregnant. She refuses to reveal who the father is, and the town fathers throw her in jail. Arthurs heart aches for Hester, and waffles between confession and hypocrisy. Six months later, the child, Pearl, is born in jail. Arthur prevails upon the governor to free Hester. Hester is taken to the scaffold to make a public repentance, but she does not admit her sin, and is forced to wear a scarlet letter A for punishment. Roger Prynne appears under the name Roger Chillingworth, and things begin to get complicated. Chillingworth discovers that Dimmesdale is Hesters lover. One night, Roger disguises as an Indian to murder Dimmesdale, but wrongly killed Wilsons son. This causes a great disturbance. Hester takes the terrible risk of writing to Dirmmesdale, reminding him to keep his silence. Hester and four other women are framed as witches and are sentenced to death. Dimmesdale climbs to the scaffold and declares I love this woman, I am the father of her
