Recently, because of a variety of objective factors, the Historic District is gradually from once prosperity to decline, the old buildings and poor physical environment makes the historical District gradually become a synonym for urban clutter and backward. At the same time, hiding historical veins in the street gradually disappearing. So, it is important issues how to rehabilitate the Historic District now.The paper focuses on the historical district, to elaborate renewal and the concept of protection, to define renewal and the protection of historical district. The paper adopt summarize、 analysis and empirical research methods, to comprehensive analysis of the history of the East andWest district in the theoretical development and to explore the ideal model in the citys historic protection und renewal. Selecting typical examples of the historical district: the Sanxue Street Historic District, the Beiyuanmen Historic District and the Chenghuang Temple Historic District in Xian in the three different functional characteristics.
