IIT LIB-related Study Program 10-11 (May 2010) Chapter 2 Trends in the LIB-powered Vehicle Market In this program, we gather information on LIB-powered vehicles and deliver it to our client companies every six months, but even within that short span, there has been a dramatic shift in the interest of LIB suppliers, materials and equipment manufacturers and others in the industry towards BEVs. HEVs do not carry much LIB capacity, and Toyota and Honda are the only companies really mass-producing them, so the business opportunities are limited. Some take the view that PHEVs are the realistic eco-car solution for the future, but if the type of PHEV is an offshoot of parallel HEVs or THS, the situation would be the same, because Toyota and Honda would still have the edge, with the technology from HEV mass production and their overwhelming lead in cost reduction ability. There are also PHEVs like the GM Chevy Volt that are series-type HEVs derived from BEVs, but compared to that type 1 of PHEV, many take the view that BEVs are a more attractive product, with far simpler structures and absolutely zero emissions while driving, and more companies are likely to enter that market. The contents of this section, and the recent related news, are becoming almost entirely BEV related. For the HEV market, we will only check recent sales performance (Figure II-1). We have not been able to obtain global market data on HEVs, so we have examined movements in sales of Prius and Insight HEVs in the Japanese and US markets.
