IIT LIB-related Study Program 10-11 (June 2010) Chapter 3 Trends in the LIB Circuit Market This chapter examines the latest trends in the market for Battery Management Systems (BMS). We will update the state of BMS shipments for conventional applications, such as notebook computers, and concentrate on the state of component shipments by IC suppliers and the direction of their technical development. We will also examine the cost composition of circuit components within packs. The prices of electronic components for notebook computers have been dropping continuously, but that decline has been offset by volume growth, to maintain the value-based size of the market. Sales of low-cost notebook computers are particularly strong, so the notebook computer brands and packers are more concerned with cutting costs than raising capacity. Components and vendors were reselected in CY09 and, for example, SII captured a large amount of market share from TI in the 2nd protection IC field. Simplo moved quickly to choose cheaper components from Neotec (Taiwan) over those from SII. Supplies of protectors for cellular phones are an oligopoly between four companies: Seiko Instruments (SII), Mitsumi Denki, Ricoh and Hitachi ULSI Systems. The proportion of Multi-Chip Packages (MCP) among BMS boards is increasing, and South Korean manufacturers are capturing some of that business.
