Chapter Two Semantic Translation Lecturer: Guo Yayin August 30th, 2011 Warming-up Translation Process SL TL In-put (Comprehension) out-put (expression) Terms Introduction 1. 语义翻译（semantic translation） The translator conveys the proper contextual meaning within the limit of the grammatical structure and syntactic structure of TL and SL. e.g. Fred takes it home with him and returned it a few days later beautifully bound. 2. 语用翻译/交际翻译 Produce the effect on TL readers as close as that obtained on the TL readers. It is a kind of TL oriented translation. e.g. 吃了没？ Good morning/ afternoon/ evening? 3. Context 词本无义，义随文生。 No context, no translation. e.g. Ill finish the book next week. Collocation influences meaning of words. e.g. 上 红：红烧肉（red-cooked meat） 红茶（black tea） 红火（prosperous） 怡红公子（Green boy） (2) Gap between Chinese and English words The connotation and denotation of Chinese and English words are not overlapping, but distant. connotation: an idea that is implied or suggested (内涵意义) denotation: ?the most direct or specific meaning of a word or expression; the class of objects that an expression refers to (外延意义) e.g.
