WHITE PAPER Cisco Content Routing Protocols IP networking played a fundamental role in the rapid development of today’s Internet. However, moving forward the Internet will require content-level intelligence and must optimize content requests, not requests for computer systems. Key services that content intelligence provides includes: 1. Content routing 2. Traffic prioritization for content 3. Services that scale economically and respond appropriately to unpredictable flash crowds 4. The ability to track content requests and respond with content updates and replication To name a few. Cisco provides a host of content routing protocols that enable enterprises and Internet service providers (ISPs) alike to build content delivery networks. These protocols enable communication about content state among Cisco networking products. The Cisco IOS® software, LocalDirector, Content router, and Cache Engine are examples of platforms from which content routing protocols can be implemented. These protocols, which include Director Response Protocol (DRP), Dynamic Feedback Protocol (DFP), Web Cache Control Protocol (WCCP), and Boomerang Control Protocol (BCP) allow the Cisco suite of products to work as a cohesive system, enabling robust content delivery services. This paper describes and positions each content routing protocol. Dynamic Feedback Protocol The Dynamic Feedback Protocol (DFP) enables load-balancing devices to take advantage of valuable information that resides on servers and other network appliances. Used in local or global load-balancing environments, DFP gives servers the ability to dynamically provide statistical load and availability information back to the server load-balancing (SLB) device.
