* * * * 5 * The performance management application is what end users interact to for network performance monitoring. It determines what data should be collected and how frequently the collection should occur. It controls data aggregation and statistical analysis to support various reports. It also sets proper thresholds for exception conditions. And most importantly, it provides various types of reports. It contains a pre-defined set of reports, as well as the ability to allow users to customize the reports. These reports allow users to monitor the performance, troubleshoot performance problems, perform service level management, and obtain trending information for capacity planning. This is a centralized function, which relies on a central data repository containing all the performance data gathered from a users network. * * * * ·????Generic Collection Mode: this mode allows the user (upper layer application ) to specify the names of the MIB variables (or OIDs) to collect from a device. E.g., upper layer application can specifies, “collect MIB variables A, B, C from device D every 15 min”. ? ·????Technology Specific Mode: in some instances, the detailed knowledge of the data being collected is so complex that it makes sense for the collector to hide that level of detail(e.g., collecting data from complex MIBs like Cisco Call History MIB). Also in some cases, the data collected needs to be processed before collector can forward them to upper layer applications. Both of them require the collector to have intimate knowledge about the data being collected. This mode is referred to as Technology Specific Mode.
