0. Abstract
Determining curricular requirements for the future of higher education is an important issue in the field
of curriculum studies. I want to look at this topic from the point of view of curriculum development in
order to detect those curriculum patterns that could most likely meet future challenges.
After talking about future requirements for a university curriculum, the principles of curriculum
development and the academic discourse determining current views on curriculum design, I analyzed
existing curriculum patterns according to one essential criterion: coherence. I narrowed the range down
to two coherent curriculum patterns to be discussed in depth, on the one hand the spiral curriculum and
on the other hand the process-oriented curriculum. Finally, I compared both in terms of advantages,
disadvantages and feasibility, discussing which one among them might suit higher education best under
the given conditions. Based on these insights, I found that a spiral curriculum might suit undergraduate
education best, while a process-oriente
