History of Costume in Hong Kong Objectives To explore the changes about dress in Hong Kong from its inception to 1970s. To find out the historical development and social change of Hong Kong through a historical encyclopedia of costumes. To self-reflect one’s attitude towards dressing styles in the 21st century. Why do you wear clothes? For protection? For decoration? Anything else? Have you think that one’s dressing style reflect his/her age, ethnic origin, social status and occupation? How about yourself? What clothes do you wear during childhood? Compare and contrast with that in traditional ancient times. Share your own photos with us! Do you know in which century people wore these clothes? Are they some traditional costumes? And let’s observe the following picture. What makes the difference of their feet and yours? Any implicit meanings? Do you think that there is a symbolic expression of folk beliefs about dressing? Very often, we can hear that ‘men do not wear any hat in green’. Why? Colors What colors do you like? For me…purple, white and green! But, white represents ‘sadness’ in traditional Chinese society – just the opposite of the West! Think about what color of the wedding dress people wear in traditional wedding and western style of wedding. Rural Clothing Have your grandparents ever lived in rural areas and dressed in styles that were quite different from us? Let me show you a picture. Any difference be
