* * Seismic assessment of RC frames under combined horizontal and vertical excitations A.Kadid, D.Yahiaoui 1) Senior Lecturer, Laboratoire de Recherche en Hydraulique Appliquée, University of Batna, Algeria 2) PhD Student, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Batna, Algeria. abdelkrim.kadid@, djarir2020@yahoo.fr Introduction Generally, for reinforced concrete structures, the horizontal component of ground motion has been considered to be the most critical for the safety design of the structures than the vertical excitation which has been generally neglected in the design and rarely studied. In near field earthquakes, the vertical acceleration of a strong motion may exceed the horizontal one and the ratio of peak vertical/horizontal acceleration may exceed the conventionally adopted value of two thirds and tends to excite the vertical vibration of floor slabs. Thus, the effect of vertical accelerations may become a concern in the seismic assessment of reinforced concrete framed structures. REPRESENTATION OF INELASTICITY To simulate the inelastic response of structures under seismic action, two different modelling philosophies are commonly used: the concentrated plasticity and the distributed inelasticity approaches. In the concentrated approach, the inelastic deformations are lumped at the member ends, instead of considering the spread of inelastic deformations along the member length. The most widely nonlinear models used in most analyses are : the one component model and the dual component model. The distributed inelasticity describes more accurately the continuous structural characteristics of reinforced concrete members, requiring simply geometrical and material characteristics as input data. The fibre modelling represents the spread of material inelasticity both along the member length and across the section area, which permits an accurate estimation of the structural damage distribution even in the highly inelastic range DESCRIPTION OF THE
