Chapter Overview The text’s first chapter lays the foundation for Part One: Fundamentals of Accounting (chapters 1 through 5). Together, this material offers a comprehensive introduction to basic accounting statements and techniques. Chapter 1 introduces accounting’s main product, financial statements. It utilizes a real company’s (Union Plaza Hotel Casino, Inc.) financial statements as well as illustrations of accounting information’s role in the decision-making process. The authors’ creative approach keeps students in a “hands on” mode through use of Union Plaza Inc.’s financial statements and footnote disclosures (Learning Objectives 2, 3, and 5). In addition, Learning Objective 4 provides a solid link to economic concepts critical to successful construction of financial statements. Chapter Problems by Learning Objective The cases offered at the chapter’s conclusion address all 5 learning objectives. Chapter Table of Contents Page Objective 1 – What financial accounting is. 1-1 Objective 2 – What economic information is conveyed in financial statements. 1-2 Objective 3 – How accounting information is used and why it is important. 1-4 Objective 4 – A framework for understanding accounting information. 1-5 Objective 5 – To begin to read actual financial statements by looking at excerpts from the reports of real companies. 1-8 Chapter Outline by Learning Objective Objective 1 – What financial
