Course Description:
This course is an introduction to the basic principles and applications of digital signal processing. At the end of the course students will: understand the implications of the sampling theorem and the consequences of aliasing and quantization distortion; appreciate the importance of the z-transform and its properties, and the impulse response and transfer function of a digital filter; have an awareness of different structures available for the realization of finite impulse response (FIR) and infinite impulse response (IIR) digital filters; be familiar with ideal filter approximation functions; be able to design linear phase FIR and IIR filters to meet prescribed specifications; be able to use the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and its fast form (FFT) to perform signal analysis, and be conscious of spectral leakage and smearing effects;

Teaching will be in the form of lectures with complementary tutorials and/or laboratory (laboratories).? Tutorials will be informal, and may include a number of different support methods.? For example: problem solving; general discussions; student presentations; resolving students’ difficulties. The laboratory support, if any, will complement the lecture and reinforce students’ understanding of the material.
