A Framework of Analysis of Style (2);2. Potential Style Markers in Phonology and Graphology;sound symbolism;; (b) Onomatopoeia—sounds are imitative of their sense. Onomatopoeia is actually the mutual reinforcement of sense by sound and sound by sense.
Onomatopoeic words are used to produce
sound images and thus vivid effect.
Examples:
The actor was hissed off the stage.
The clock ticked away the minutes.
She clapped the book shut.
The door banged open.
The sausages sizzled in a pan on the stove.
The cow mooed.

usually acceptable in ordinary conversational speech, esp. in rapid speech, thus often become markers of a very informal or very casual style.
