Onomatopoeia is actually the mutual reinforcement of sense by sound and sound by sense. Onomatopoeic words are used to produce sound images and thus vivid effect. Examples: The actor was hissed off the stage. The clock ticked away the minutes. She clapped the book shut. The door banged open. The sausages sizzled in a pan on the stove.
