Jha Rajendra Agricultural University, Bihar Presentation in National Seminar on Importance of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in Bihar Economy, 8-9 April 2008 Bihar: Land and its Utilization Surmounting population pressure on land - Cultivated area 60% of reporting (only 47% in India) Cropping intensity 142% 189% in Punjab Gross irrigated area 55% - 94% in Punjab Marginal horizontal and vertical expansion of area for crop cultivation Low per capita agricultural income This necessitates measures for increasing the crop intensity and income Medicinal plant and its therapeutic impact A medicinal plant is any plant in which, one or more of its organ(s) contains substances that can be used for therapeutic purposes, or which are precursors for chemo-pharmaceutical semi synthesis (WHO). Medicinal plants are used for treatment of various ailments. The diagram here shows organ wise use of various medicinal plants for human health care. What favours MAPs ?
