Abstract Zhao Bian (1008—1084)is not a famous poet in the middle period of Northern Song Dynasty, so his poetry is not studied by scholars in the history thoroughly. This thesis aims at having a detailing study on his poetry from three parts. The first part (Chapter 1) comprising two sections narrates and remarks the research achievements on Zhao Bian in the history. In Section 1, the researches on Zhao Bian are gleaned extensively by index and are arranged in order of dynasties to be serves as the first hand study material on Zhao Bian. In Section 2, a study on Section 1 finds two problems: Firstly, there is not any thorough study on Zhao Bian’s poetry; secondly, there is not correct school on Zhao Bian’s poetry. The second part (Chapter 2 and Chapter 3) solves the first problem; the third part(Chapter 4) solves the second problem. Chapter 2 comprising two sections studies Zhao Bian’s poetry from subjects and themes. Section 1 studies the landscape subjects and four themes relating to the subjects. Sections 2 studies the communication subjects and three themes relating to the subjects. Chapter 3 comprising three sections studies the poetry artistic style of Zhao Bian. Section 1 discusses “Writing Poetry as Prose”; Section 2 discusses a strict rhyme; Section 3 discusses a plain language style. Chapter 4 comprising two sections studies the location of Zhao Bian’s poetry by distinguishing it from the “Later Tang Poetry Artistic Style ”in the initial period of Northern Sony Dynasty and by classifying it to the initiating poetry school in the middle period of Northern Song Dynasty.
