DLT – Peru – Bolivia – EcuadorAugust 9-18, 2005Celia DesmondTrends in TelecommunicationsThe morning of Tuesday, August 9 I was met at the airport in Lima by Jorge Reyna Ponce de León, the Peru Chapter Chair. He took me to the hotel, where he left me for the afternoon, as I had requested. At 6 pm he picked me up to go to an IEEE leaders meeting where Cleon Anderson and Mike Lightner were speaking. Ted Hissey was also there. The meeting was held at CONFIEP, which is the club for business people. The president of this club and other directors were present as well as the minister for production (industries). These talks were quite interesting, and it was a good chance to meet many local IEEE people, including Pepe Valdez, who seems to be the father of IEEE in Peru. After the talk Pepe took me back to my hotel. He is in the process of building a certification process for engineering in Peru. August 10 Jorge picked me up for to my talk to the Colegio de Ingenieros del Perú (CIP), the Engineers Association. There were many more IEEE people there, including the chair of the student branch and the student branch chapter, plus members of the Section executive. After the talk, Jorge and his girlfriend took me to a wonderful restaurant on the beach for lunch. Then, since I had not yet been able to connect to email, Jorge left me in one of his offices, with Luis Roca, who works for Jorge and Luis got me connected to both email and my web class chat. The office was above one of his stores, so the two store personnel took me back to the hotel afterwards, where I was able to do more processing of email.Thursday morning, Jorge met me again to take me to Universidad Tecnologica del Peru, where I gave a talk at their 12th running of a student conference, INTELCON. This talk also seemed to go well. For the first portion a student, Carlos Aguilar, acted as translator. Carlos also accompanied Jorge and I to visit the Dean, and later the university labs.
