Mesopotamia DAWN OF THE CIVILIZATION 一.WHERE WAS MESOPOTAMIA？ The Greeks called the area of the world’s first civilization “Mesopotamia’’ which was approximately 300 miles long and 150 wide,means “the land between the rivers’’.This name was appropriate because ancient Mesopotamia was located between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in the present-day Middle Eastern country of Iraq. These rivers actually begin in east Turkey,flow southeast and come together in Iraq. They then empty into the Persian Gulf. 2 .CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENT The climate for the region ranged from seasons of cool to hot seasons with temperatures often over 110 degrees Fahrenheit.Mesopotamia experienced moderate rainful.The land of Mesopotamia was once dominated by floods,but today is mostly desert.The seasonal flooding was a challenge to the farmers of it. 3. CRADLE OF CIVILIZATION Mesopotamia is often referred to as the “cradle of civilization” because the world’s first civilization occurred here.The scared place where writing first appeared.The Southern Mesopotamia was under the control of a series of kings from 3000B.C.to the 6th century.The northern Mesopotamia kingdom of Assyria,in existence by 1500B.C. would become a great empire between the19th and the 7th centuries B.C. POTTERRY STATUS 1.SUMER Sumer was the world’s first civilization .It was located in the southern area of Mesopotamia where the twin rivers converged. The people who lived in this area were called Sumerians. 2.WRITING The earliest form of writing dates back to 3300B.C. People back then would draw word-pictures on clay tablets using a pointed instrument called a stylus. These developed into wedge-shaped signs. 3.MONARCHY The Sumerians seem to have developed one of the world’s first system of monarchy;the early states they formed need a new form of government in order to govern larger areas and divers peoples.The very first states in human history,the states of Sumer,seemed to have been rulled by a type of priest-king,
