The American Dream Question If given a chance, would you migrate to America? The American Dream: refers to a promise of prosperity, freedom and success. American Dream is rooted in the second sentence of the United States Declaration of Independence which states that “all men are created equal” and that they are “endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights” including “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” American immigration history can be viewed in four epochs: the colonial period, the mid-nineteenth century, the turn of the twentieth, and post-1965. Each epoch brought distinct national groups, races to the United States. During the seventeenth century, approximately 175,000 Englishmen migrated to Colonial America. For many immigrants, the Statue of Liberty was their first view of the United States, signifying freedom and personal liberty. The statue is a symbol of the United States and of the American Dream Over half of all European immigrants to Colonial America during the 17th and 18th centuries arrived as indentured servants. The mid-nineteenth century saw mainly an influx from northern Europe; the early twentieth-century mainly from Southern and Eastern Europe; post-1965 mostly from Latin America and Asia. 1888 cartoon in Puck attacks businessmen for welcoming large numbers of low paid immigrants, leaving the American workingman unemployed PART ONE: 1-2 many immigrants are unwilling to stay in America Ailing: slowing Rounded up: to seek out and bring together Hail from: come from PART TWO:3-8 the author analyzes the reasons why they are unwilling to stay in America Apprehension: arrest Chalk up: attribute to, credit to Go after: arrest or pursue * *
