* Following the CAFE programme the Thematic Strategy on air pollution promoted new Euro 5 and Euro 6 standards and stricter standard for high duty vehicles Regulation (EC) No 715/2007 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 June 2007 (Euro 5 and Euro 6) Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on type-approval of motor vehicles and engines with respect to emissions from heavy duty vehicles (Euro VI) and on access to vehicle repair and maintenance information 2007/0295 (COD) 21.12.2007 THIS IS HOW THE LEGISLATION IS PUT INTO ACTION Euro 5 for light duty vehicle ( September 2009). The main effect of Euro 5 is to reduce the emission of particulate matter from diesel cars from 25mg/km to 5mg/km. Euro 6 is scheduled to enter into force in January 2014 and will mainly reduce the emissions of NOx from diesel cars further, from 180mg/km to 80mg/km. Concerning heavy duty vehicles the proposal sets a limit of 400 mg/kWh for NOx and a limit of 10 mg/kwh It represents a reduction of 80% in NOx and 66% in PM in relation to Euro V Days with exceedance of threshold can be shown for any area in Germany, also the annual average.
