The introduction of the half-rate greatly increases the network capacity and the utilization of wireless network resources also increases larger than that of before. Half-rate encoding technology, to a certain extent, effectively help operators to expand the GSM network capacity without increasing the hardware cost. But due to reasons of technical coding, half-rate encoding inevitably has some gaps of the voice quality compared to original full-rate encoding. Therefore, how to effectively implement of half -rate in the now network is the issue that we are very concerned about. Firstly this article made an overview of digital mobile communication system , and it mainly introduces the basic structure, the wireless interface theory of the mobile communication system and the GSM system of two key technologies. Then it researches the voice source code technology and the half- rate voice channel format ,including the basic principles of GSM voice coding, focus on the Code Excited Linear Prediction coding technology of the principle of coding schemes to improve the way. Secondly, on the basis of the function from the half-rate applied research, the performance analysis of half rate and half-rate feature impact on the network quality ,it made further analysis of the GSM system half-rate technology. Finally, by introducing the principle of the half-rate technology, it will use the half-rate coding technology in Harbin Unicom GSM network, use traffic statistics analysis, the network test, and signaling to authenticate tracking the half-rate trigger and half-rate channel scheduling.
