Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald(1896-1940) Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was one of the greatest American writers in the 20th century. His whole life was trapped by 2 things: one was talent, the other was money. He once had and then all lost. During his short life, he wrote 4 long novels and 150 short fictions. He was a spokesman of the Jazz Age. Life experience September 1896 :Birth of Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald in St.Paul, Minnesota. October 1909: Publication of The Mystery of the Raymond Mortgage, Fitzgeralds first appearance in print. September 1913: Fitzgerald entered Princeton University. February1919: Fitzgerald discharged from army. March 1920: Publication of This Side of Paradise. April 1925: Publication of The Great Gatsby. december 1940: Fitzgerald died of heart attack. Major works: This Side of Paradise Flappers and Philosophers The Beautiful and Damned Tales of the Jazz Age The Great Gatsby Tender Is the Night The Last Tycoon This Side of Paradise Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald finished the draft of his first novel, This Side of Paradise, in Princeton and then he left for the army. Its publication by Scribners in April 1920 made him a literary celebrity before his twenty-fourth birthday. It won for him wealth and fame. It became immensely popular for the simple reason that it caught the tone of the age. The book described Fitzgeralds sense of failure with his academic performance and the frustration of his dreams at Princeton. He could glamorize wealth and yet stand away from the people who had it-and look at their values with utter detachment and sometimes with horror.This Side of Paradise captured the hopes of success of Americans but also the fears of failure and poverty.
