Based on the analysis of partial 16S rRNA and eneral physiolo ical and biochemical characteristics, strain Y1 was identified as Sp hingobacterium multivolum. This is the first report on biode radation of the herbicide mefenacet as a source of carbon and ener y by Sp hingobacterium multiv o rum . Strain Y 1 efficiently had biode radedMefenacet with approximately 90% de radation rate within 1 week. The optimal temperature for its rowth and mefenacet de radation were 28 and32 , respectively. Strain Y1was able to biode rade mefenacet at the ran e from pH 5to 9. Compared to temperature, the effect of pH to strain Y 1was more si nificant.
