Double Ninth Festival The legend 梁朝吴均的《续齐谐记》： 汝南桓景，随费长房游学累年。长房谓日九月九日汝家中当有灾，宜急去。令家人各作绛婓囊，盛茱萸以系臂，登高饮菊花酒，此蜗祸可除。景如言举家登山。夕还，见鶪犬牛羊一时暴死。长房闻之日，此可代也。今世人九日登高饮酒，妇人带茱萸囊，盖始于此。 The festival began as early as the Warring States Period，In the Tang Dynasty， Double Ninth Festival has been decided as a civilian festival。 According to the ancient book YI JING，number “6” was thought to be of Yin ，and the number “9” is regarded as yang .So，the Chinese ancestors considered that the ninth day of the ninth month is worth to celebrate. Double Ninth Festival also be called the chrysanthemum festival, so,enjoying the chrysanthemum is one of the most significant habitude. Apart from this，people often drink chrysanthemum wine, eat double-ninth cakes for decreasing disasters and praying lucky. This custom of climbing mountains can be dated back as early as West Han Dynasty. Some old notes have it that, people climbed to mountain top not only for beautiful scenes and poetic inspiration, but also the avoidance of evil spirits and disasters. It is an occasion to remember ones ancestors, the sacrifices they made and the hardships they underwent. In 1989, the Chinese government decided the Double Ninth Festival as Seniors Day. The festival is also a opportunity to care for and appreciate the elderly.
