Five Elements Doctrine of the five elements is also a native materialist idea of philosophy in ancient China. It holds that every thing in the universe is made from wood, fire, earth, metal and water. TCM, applying doctrine of the five elements to medical field, investigates human body by viewpoint of systematic structure so as to expound the organic connections among parts, parts and the whole body as well as unity of human body and its external environment. Classification “Wood bends and straightens” The attribute of tree is growing freely, being able both to bend and straighten. It is extended that anything that has the properties or actions of flourishing, harmony and unfolding is attributed to wood. wood Liver (promote the spreading of qi and blood) Green (trees produce green leaves) Sour (green in color is usually sour) Spring(trees germinate in spring) “Fire burns and flames up” Fire is characterized by hotness and upward-going. It is extended that anything that has the properties or actions of warm-hotness, brightness and going-up is attributed to fire. “Earth provides for sewing reaping” Earth holds and produces everything. It is extended that anything that has the properties or actions of receiving, holding and producing belongs to earth. So, there is such sayings as “everything grows from the earth” and “the earth holds the other four elements” “Metal works towards transformation” Metal itself is mostly from changes of ores through smelting. Metal is heavy in quality, and is often used for killing or cutting. So, anything whose properties or actions are descending, purifying and astringent is attributed to metal. “water moistens and descends” Water has the property of moistening and tends to flow downward. It is extended that anything that has the properties or actions of moistening, downward-going, cool-coldness and storing, pertains to water.
