Rumors were circulating around Paris that the King was going to send troops to occupy the capital The Bastille The Bastille was an old fortress/prison which currently was rumored to be used as a weapons and ammunitions storage The Bastille commander refused to open the gates and opened fire on the crowd The enrage mob stormed - and despite causalities - overtook the Bastille July, 14th is known as Bastille day in France and serves as their Independence Day Starvation and inflation in the countryside In 1789 France had a horrific famine with grain prices rising to incredible highs Rumors – What are the dangers of the following… Marauders attacking villages Government troops were seizing peasant crops Outraged by medieval dues from nobles and motivated by “The Great Fear” the peasants began attacking the nobles Burning down houses Burning old manor records Stole grain from storehouses Paris during the Great Fear Pamphlets calling for the end of the Monarchy Political clubs kept fueling the revolution Marquis de Lafayette headed the National Guard and were mainly sympathetic to the people The end of Feudalism The Great Fear and the Bastille forced the National Assembly into action The National Assembly now was composed of the leaders of the 3rd estate, 47 nobles and a lot of the clergy (who became sympathetic) joined them On August 4th the National Assembly voted to end their privileges Gave up manorial dues, their exclusive hunting rights, their special legal status and their exemption from taxation Declaration of the Rights of Man All men were “born and remain free and equal in rights” and enjoy natural rights such as “liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression: Got Locke?
