ABSTRACTThe ABSTRACT The aim of the thesis is to study how public libraries provide relevant information services to unemployed women in Guangzhou．The thesis is divided into 6 chapters：introduction，present conditions of services for the public library’S readers in China,survey design and findings，analysis of fmdings，how public libraries in Guangzhou provide information services to unemployed women and conclusions．Using the method of questionnaire survey,the author analyzes the information needs of unemployed women in Guangzhou from 1 5 aspects．These include the most needed information，the most popular channel of acquiring information，the place where most information is acquired，the satisfaction level of information channels，the organization most-wished to provide information，frequency of library visit，whether willing to pay for information services，and SO on．Based on the questionnaire survey, the author analyzes the major characteristics of information needs of unemployed women in Guangzhou in five areas．These include the characteristics ofthe user,categories of information，information sou．rees， information media and methods of information services．The author puts forward her own opinions on how public libraries should provide information services to unemployed women．The suggestions are made as follows：(1)to increase awareness of providing services to the Ⅱ disadvantaged disadvantaged group，a)to activate proactive information awareness of users，(3)to improve the user’s ability of information access，(4)to pay attention to the potential information need of users，(5)to integrate library resources，(6)to make public libraries more user-friendly，(7)to provide quality services；(8)to develop community libraries．The author concludes that public libraries should develop specialized databases， create websites or web pages to provide information services，to establish users’reading clubs for unemployed women，with the aim to provide specialized services for them．The author also
