Where a definition varies from an established standard, it is only being done to attempt to clarify the meaning of information contained in other Gleason publications. There is no intent by Gleason to write new standards. -A- ABRASIVE TOOTH WEAR is the wear that takes place between contacting tooth surfaces due to foreign particles such as dirt, sand, scale, or metal particles which are carried by the lubricant into the tooth mesh. ABSOLUTE TANGENTIAL VELOCITY at a point of contact between mating gear teeth is the Vectorial velocity of the point on each individual member in a plane tangent to the tooth surface. ACCELEROMETER is a transducer or pick-up which provides a voltage output proportional to its acceleration. ACRUF eq \o\ac(○,R) is a trademark applied to a Gleason roughing tool with a cutting edge which closely approximates the shape of a tooth profile at the outer end of the tooth. These tools are used in pairs on a two-tool straight bevel generator to rough-cut gears without generating roll. ADDENDUM is the height by which a tooth projects beyond the pitch circle or pitch line. Also it is the radial distance between the pitch circle and the addendum circle. On bevel and hypoid gears it is understood to be the outer ends of the teeth. ADDENDUM ANGLE in bevel and hypoid gears, is the angle between elements of the face cone and pitch cone.
