Game of Thrones is part of Song of Ice and Fire, which is a series of epic fantasy novels by the American novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin. The story takes place on the fictional continents Westeros and Essos, where seasons last for years on end. Storyline The principal story chronicles a power struggle for the Iron Throne of Westeros after King Roberts death. It is told primarily through The house of Stark and Lannister. Storyline House Stark of Winterfell: rulers of the North, the largest region of the continent. Led by Lord Eddard Stark. House Lannister of Casterly Rock: rulers of the Westerlands. Lord Eddard Stark, King Roberts Hand (chief advisor) discovers that Joffrey and his siblings are the offspring of incest by siblings Jaime and Cersei Lannister, Eddard is executed for treason and Roberts brothers Stannis and Renly lay separate claims to the throne. Then the wars begin. The second story takes place on the northern border of Westeros, where an eight-thousand-year-old wall of ice defends Westeros from the Others. The Walls sentinels, the Sworn Brotherhood of the Nights Watch protect the realm of Westeros (land of the seven kingdoms), whereas the Free Folk or wildlings are humans living and “White Walkers” north of the Wall.
